Resource management

Exploitation of natural resources has been increasing for years. Worldwide primary material use has more than doubled within the past 30 years. With the world population rising to up to 10 billion people by 2050, approximately 140 billion tons of primary material will be consumed. However, natural resource availability is limited in many cases. Therefore, protection and efficient use of natural resources are substantial for the existence of future generations. By adopting the German Programme on Resource Efficiency in February 2012, Germany as one of the first states agreed on objectives, guiding principles and approaches to action for the protection of natural resources. It was already in 2002 that the goal of doubling raw material productivity until 2020 compared with 1994 was embedded in the national sustainability strategy.

A holistic resource management comprises protection and efficient use of available resources. It needs to be understood as a process to maximize social and economic well-being on an equal basis without impairing vital ecosystems. In this light ecological objective will be linked with economic and social goals. An active participation and cooperation of diverse societal and private actors is indispensable.

Based on material flow analysis, COOPERATIVE develops integrated management concepts and assists states, municipalities and enterprises with the implementation. Natural resources such as water, nutrients, and energy; economical resources and social resources (i.e. human resources and know how) will be assessed and integrated solutions will be developed.
